Choosing The Right Boiler For Your Home

Our homes and commercial properties cannot be without heating, especially during the winter months when temperatures plummet. What’s more, we also need our boilers to help us access hot water. However, choosing a new boiler can prove to be a difficult task, after all, there are many to choose from and they all claim to offer something different. To be honest, the amount of options available is rather bewildering!

Despite this, spend time looking into the different types of boilers available and you will soon see that these differences actually matter. When you have combi boilers, regular boilers and system boilers to pick from, you need to know that you are making the right choice. Furthermore, you need to pick right one to ensure that you save money in the long run too. If you think that a boiler is a boiler and they all do the same then it could be time to think again. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to boilers and so, we have done everything possible to provide clarity on the different models and what they offer, all of which can help you make the right decision.

Combi, Regular and System Boilers - What are the Differences?

In recent years, the technology behind central heating has evolved and that has meant that you can now choose from three different types of boiler. These are known as combi, regular and system boilers. So, this probably doesn’t yet help you decide, after all, what do they offer, what do they do and why are they so different? Read on and things should become clearer.

Got a Small Home? A Combi Boiler is Best

In the UK, the most popular type of boiler is a combi boiler. This is because they are compact and small while they are quick and easy to install. Therefore, they can take up little space and that ensures you don’t lose a large portion of your home to your boiler.

So, what are the key features?

A combi boiler offers a useful feature which is the ability to access water that is heated directly from the main as opposed to it coming from a hot water cylinder. What this means is that you can instantly access hot water when you need it. Another great benefit of opting for this type of boiler is that you will notice a difference when showering as the water is delivered from mains pressure which makes for a powerful shower.

This type of boiler is suitable for small and medium homes where water use is relatively low which means that not many taps are likely to be running at the same time.

However, they might not be as useful for those homes with large families. This is due to the fact that water might be used at the same time in the likes of the kitchen or the shower.

Got A Large Home? - A System Boiler is the Right Choice

If you have a larger home and need to have a constant supply of water to many outlets at one time then you are likely to benefit from system boilers. These are self-contained units and with that comes the advantage of faster installation that is simple.

When it comes to key features, the water is heated in a hot cylinder and that ensures that there is a constant supply of hot water to different water sources throughout the home at any single time. Furthermore, they provide a greater level of efficiency which makes them economical and with that comes the ability to save money on your energy bills. What’s more, you will still be able to access water that offers high pressure from the mains.

So, a system boiler might be the better choice if you have a bigger home that has more than one bathroom, as this means that there is likely to be a higher demand for water.

What About Regular Boilers? Where Do They Fit In?

So you might have a small house or you might have a large house, which means that you know which type of boiler is best for your home. However, you might be wondering where regular boilers might fit in but we will make that as clear as possible.

Regular boilers are also known as a conventional boiler or a traditional boiler. So, this option might prove best for you if you have a home that is likely to need several water outlets used at the same time. They can be installed to work with older hot water systems although they might not have the ability to handle the high water pressure that is known to come from modern combi boilers.

There are some excellent key features that come with regular boilers. Should you need the ability to access a large amount of hot water then you can rely on a regular boiler to supply the hot water that you need. Furthermore, it can supply this hot water instantly to a number of outlets without losing the strength of the flow rate. If you are someone who likes to do their bit for the environment then you will be pleased to know that regular boilers can also be used in conjunction with solar systems that generate energy from the sun. This can help to keep your energy bills down. However, there is one downside and that’s the fact that you will need more space. There is a separate hot and cold water storage tank, which means that you will need to find additional space for them to be installed.

This type of boiler is considered to be best for bigger homes that have more than two bathrooms or those homes that might have an ensuite. They are also ideal for those areas that suffer from low pressure as they can deliver water at a good rate.

Installing Boilers in a Domestic Setting

When it comes to your home, it’s important that you have the right boiler. Whether you are looking to upgrade your existing system or you are looking for a completely new boiler, you need to know what options are available to you. However, prior to having your boiler installed, it is imperative that the condition of your existing pipework is understood as this will ensure that the installation goes as smoothly as possible.

Boiler Installation for Large Homes

For homes that are significantly larger, then a commercial boiler might be required. In order for this to be installed then you will need to use a service that has the ability to carry out this work professionally and safely.

I was really concerned about getting a new boiler by a company I found on the internet. We need not have worried in fact quite the opposite. Excellent communication, great price, lovely office staff, fantastic installation team. No mess, no bother I just wish that we had done it years ago. They moved the boiler out of the kitchen into the airing cupboard, silent boiler fabulous shower pressure no tanks in the loft. They stayed until about 9 pm to finish the job that day. We can't thank you enough.

My experience with Prime Time Boilers has been truly excellent all the way. My old boiler was deemed dangerous to use at this year check-up; I called Prime Time Boiler, a very experienced engineer came to visit us and gave us advice on which boiler to buy according to our type of house and family needs; very soon after we had a brand new boiler and cylinder tank replaced by two professional and polite workers. We have also set up a yearly boiler protection plan. All was at convenient prices compared to what other companies were offering. Thank you.

Excellent job done by Ray, Jack and Mitch to install my new Worcester Bosch Combi Boiler. The job was a conversion from a conventional system and involved moving the boiler from downstairs to the upstairs airing cupboard and taking the flue up through the roof. Routing the condense pipe to avoid the possibility of freezing in winter was also a complicated job but well done. New gas lines were installed and all the old iron gas pipes were disconnected and made safe. All the work was performed in a highly professional manner and I am very satisfied with the new boiler.

Great service all round, had a friendly site visit to assess the issue of having to install a new boiler and flu which was tricky to due to flat above. They were knowledgeable and competitive and the payment plan was perfect for our needs. The actual installation was very quick the engineer was very professional and tidy so happy days. We hope to get another job sorted with them soon for a different property.
