In September 2020 the UK Government announced the Green Homes Grant Scheme offering grants of up to £500 towards the installation cost of a new boiler. Unfortunately, the scheme was scrapped 6 months later due to only 7% of households taking up the offer, the chair of the Environmental Audit Committee claimed the failure was due to the scheme’s ‘poor implementation’
What if I already have a voucher?
If you successfully applied while the scheme was open, the good news is that you can still use the voucher as long as the expiry date hasn’t passed.
Is there an alternative option available?
The only grants the Government are currently offering are part of the boiler upgrade scheme which is available for those who would like to change to a heat pump or biomass system. Grants of up to £5000 are available for an air source heat pump or biomass boiler, or £6000 for a ground source heat pump. £5000 may sound impressive, but you’ll quickly find that even with a grant, these systems are quite costly, ranging from £6000 to £18000 for a new installation as we explain in this article: Should I buy a new one boiler or will they become obsolete?.
But I need a new gas boiler, is there no help available at all?
Sadly not, unless you wish to change to one of the systems mentioned above there are no government grants available at the moment. There are various schemes available to help you make your home more energy-efficient such as insulation and alternative power options, these, however, are provided at a local authority level or via large energy providers so options vary substantially depending on where you live. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t other affordable options available though, such as finance.
There is an energy crisis going on, how can I save money?
Boilers fitter prior to 2005 won’t be energy-efficient, if your boiler is old, you will certainly benefit financially from fitting a newer A-rated boiler – in fact the average household will save around £340 a year on their gas bills from upgrading from an old boiler to a newer A-rated model.
