Whilst we are in the midst of an energy crisis and many of us are looking towards winter with fear and trepidation, we’re all looking for ways to save money on our energy bills. Upgrading to a more energy-efficient boiler is one of the things we should consider.
Getting a new boiler can be a large outlay of funds, but fortunately for many, there is assistance available.
What is ECO4?
The UK government has been running the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme since 2013 and ECO4 is the latest phase in the scheme. ECO4 is set up to help homeowners make their homes more energy efficient by installing energy-saving measures, it is not actually a government grant, rather an obligation set upon the UK’s largest energy suppliers to fund energy improvements.
The main objective of ECO4 is to reduce fuel poverty by improving the least energy-efficient homes occupied by low-income and vulnerable and fuel-poor households. This phase of the scheme will run until March 2026, however, there is a cap of 5000 grants a year available to those who want to replace boilers, so it’s worth applying sooner rather than later.
Who is eligible for a boiler grant?
ECO4 is available for households on the lowest incomes, who are in receipt of means-tested benefits, more information on this is below. Also available is the ECO4 Flex scheme which is designed to target households on low incomes, but not in receipt of benefits, this provision can vary depending on your local authority who are in charge of delivering the schemes.
To be eligible for ECO4 your home must:
- Have an energy efficiency rating of D-G
- Be either a homeowner or a private tenant (if you are a tenant, you must seek permission from your landlord).
You must be in receipt of one of the below benefits to qualify for ECO4:
- Child Tax Credits
- Child benefits (dependant on income threshold)
- Jobseekers Allowance
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Warm Home Discount Scheme Rebate
- Working Tax Credit
- Housing Benefit
- Pension Credit Saving Credit
Note that some benefits that were included in the ECO3 scheme are no longer included in the ECO4 scheme such as PIP, DLA, and AFIP.
